Bad Luck

I am a cat

I am a black cat

You better watch out on April 2nd

Make sure you don’t drop salt

Don’t let me go under your legs

Don’t go under a ladder

And don’t ever break a mirror

Try and find a four leaf clover

Or even a horseshoe

Because on April 2nd is when bad luck roams about!!

The Adventures of an Indoor Cat by Tyler Conklin

Chapter 1 The Great Escape!

It is 2:00 pm in the Sam house. They have a black cat named Shadow. Shadow is bored, so he decides he’ll escape. “But how?” Shadow asks. Shadow looks around. “Hmm,” says Shadow. Shadow gets out of his cat house and goes out into the hallway quietly, without making a sound.

Shadow makes it into the next room and looks around. He sees an open window but Shadow can’t jump that high up to the shelf. So, Shadow decides once again to move on up the stairs. Nothing. Next floor. Shadow decides once more to look around.

After hours of trying to find something like a ladder, Shadow finds one. Shadow slides the ladder carefully down to the second floor. He puts it by the shelf and goes up the ladder to the top of the shelf. Then he jumps out of the window.

Chapter 2 The Adventure Begins!

Shadow goes off on an adventure to the outside world. He decides to first run to a barn. Shadow goes inside the barn, but little does Shadow know that the barn animals don’t like black cats. He steps inside the barn and all the barn animals wake up. They start chasing Shadow. He runs and runs to the exit.

Shadow’s stomach rumbles so he decides to go to a store that sells tuna. Tuna is Shadow’s favorite midnight snack. When he arrives at the store he sees that a door is left open, so Shadow decides to go inside. Shadow finds a can of tuna and puts it on his back. Then Shadow the cat is chased out by the owner. Shadow safely makes it out with the tuna. He opens the tuna with his sharp paws and then eats the tuna.

Then Shadow looks at the clock and says to himself, “It’s almost time for the Sam family to wake up. I better get back home before the family wakes up.” So Shadow runs past the store, past the barn, then to the Sam’s house. Shadow jumps in the open window and goes to his cat house.

The Sam family wakes up to find that Shadow is sleeping. The Sam family says, “I wonder if Shadow the cat will ever go on an adventure?” Shadow wakes up to hear all about it. Shadow says to himself, “You’ll never know!” The Sam family all say, “No, Shadow the cat is an indoor cat.”

Stepping on the Cracks by Tyler Conklin

The author of the book Stepping on the Cracks is Mary Downing Hahn. She wrote a drama and historical fiction. This novel took place in the 1940s in a town called College Hill. In the story the main character was Margaret. One of the main problems was that Stuart was a deserter from the war and very sick hiding in a hut in the woods. Margaret’s life turns around because of Stuart.

First, Stuart was a deserter and was hiding in a hut and also very sick. Then Elizabeth and Margaret found the hut and found Stuart in the hut. Margaret and Elizabeth called Barbara to help. Because of Barbara, Stuart begins to get better. In the book, I’m like Stuart because I would never want to fight in a war.

Next, Stuart ran away from a war and was hiding in a hut. Then Gordy, Stuart’s brother, wasn’t going to school and not going home. Gordy claimed that a crazy man exists so the girls would not find Stuart in the woods. But they  found out that Stuart was a deserter.  “I stared at her, but she teased me with a secret for a few seconds. He’s not crazy and he’s not an old bum and he’s not a Nazi,” she finally said. Stuart is just like me, hiding from things I don’t want to face.

Then, Stuart was getting even sicker. Elizabeth and Margaret called Barbara. Barbara took Stuart to the doctor’s. Because of Barbara, Stuart got better and Barbara and Stuart fell in love.  “Gordy turned his back on us and went into the hut. Silent , Doug and Toad followed him.” Gordy doesn’t understand Stuart but he helps him anyway because he’s his brother. They show Barbara where he is. She said, “I’ll do whatever I can.” Gordy is just like me: strong and tough.  Gordy helps Stuart and I help my nana when she gets back from surgery.

This evidence proves that Stuarts very sick in a hut. This proves that Stuart is a deserter. This clearly demonstrates that Stuart is hiding from a war. This specific proof shows that he’s a 100 percent true deserter. After reading Stepping on the Cracks, I felt that Stuart has a hard life. The book deeply affected me because Stuart was very badly abused. Once I finished Stepping on the Cracks I reflected that he was almost killed. I think Stuart is coming of age to stand up for himself.

Rip Me Open

By Maiah Zaky

Rip me open,

Tear me out,

Just knock and

I would open

My home for

You

Rip and tear

And go as

You please

But know

I will fight

Your knife

Until the very end,

And I will

Never give

Up my home

To you.

I sit here

Crying, knowing

You have

Won the fight.

I tried and

Tried

But couldn’t

Keep up

And now

As I sit

In your

Car, boat, home

I know I can

Never

Go back to

Where I once

Lived

Happy and free

And now I cry

In my new place

Knowing the rest

Of my days

Are in sadness

And in fear

And I am never

Going home
